In this talk we will discuss computer simulation experiments that probe the liquid-vapor interface of thin adsorbed films. In our study, we measured the spectrum of surface fluctuations, and the results indicate that the effective surface tension that is obtained becomes dependent on the film thickness for films on the sub-nanometer scale. Such behavior can be explained in terms of a simple microscopic theory, but the implication is that the classical Young-Laplace-Derjaguin-Frumkin theory of thin adsorbed films must be corrected for films at the nanometer scale. This finding could have implications in our understanding of line tensions, spinodal dewetting and droplet dynamics.
